Which Smart Glasses Hardware Platform Should Your Brand Choose?
Compare five smart glasses hardware architectures for OEM/ODM projects, including camera, audio, waveguide AR and cinema, with practical evaluation boundaries.
Choosing an AI smart glasses OEM/ODM platform starts with the user's task: what must the glasses capture and deliver? Camera, audio and display eyewear serve different requirements. A useful supplier evaluation connects those requirements to a specific model, software workflow and production configuration.
Future Audio offers camera, open-ear audio, waveguide display and cinema platforms for OEM/ODM evaluation. The following architecture map helps brand, product, engineering and sourcing teams narrow their first sample brief.
Compare five hardware architectures
| Architecture | What it contributes | Questions to verify |
|---|---|---|
| AI + Camera | Visual capture for supported applications | Image quality, capture controls, transfer method and app access |
| AI + Audio | Microphone and open-ear audio workflows | Audio access, phone compatibility, controls and runtime |
| AI + AR | In-view information through a display | Rendering interface, readability, text layout and phone connection |
| AI + Camera + AR | Visual input combined with display output | Complete data flow, software integration, power and project readiness |
| AI + Cinema | A personal screen for compatible content sources | Source compatibility, power and accessory requirements |

Applications sit beneath these architectures. Travel translation might need spoken output, displayed text or visual recognition. Golf might mean recording a swing, hearing information or viewing prompts. The application name alone does not determine the hardware. Translation, navigation, transcription and recognition require a supported application or scoped development; they are not standard features of every model.
Match the platform to the essential workflow
For image recognition, evaluate camera capture and the path that delivers an image to the recognition service. Megapixels alone do not establish integration readiness. Scout One is a camera-platform starting point for model evaluation.
For audio assistance, evaluate the microphone path, phone application and response playback. Music playback does not prove access to microphone data for a custom assistant. Review Verse Pro against the intended audio workflow.
For reference cards, navigation prompts or captions, evaluate a waveguide display and the software delivering the text. A display platform does not automatically include a finished navigation or accessibility application. Read our camera-free display evaluation guide.
For movies and gaming, evaluate Cinema One against the intended source device. Its compatibility requirements differ from those of a lightweight prompt display.
Review the complete configuration
Brand and product teams should assess appearance, wearing comfort, controls and user experience. Engineers should assess interfaces and software responsibilities. Procurement should separate evaluation samples, pilot orders and production quotations.
Prescription lenses, photochromic lenses and detachable frames require model-specific compatibility checks. They should not be assumed to fit every smart eyewear architecture. For children's products or accessibility projects, request actual measurements and user evaluation; a general platform description does not establish suitable fit or clinical performance.
What should a first project brief include?
A practical first brief includes the user task, essential inputs and outputs, target phones, wearing conditions, intended market and project stage. Identify which functions are essential and which can wait for a later revision. That makes a first demonstration easier to evaluate and limits unnecessary development scope.
Future Audio can review the closest platform and identify what needs sample testing or custom engineering. Begin with platform comparison, review the OEM/ODM evaluation process or share your project requirements.
